Shocked? Please don’t be. That was the figure Sierra Leone’s information and communications minister gave out last week. The average number of internet users in Sierra Leone is 25,000, Alhaji I. B. Kargbo said.
When Sierra Leone confirmed for the first time that it plans to connect to the Africa Coast to Europe ACE, a submarine fibre optic cable system that would run along West Africa with connections between France and South Africa which is expected to go live in 2011, Alhaji Kargbo also disclosed at the 2-day in-country Commonwealth African Rural Connectivity Initiative COMARCI Capacity Building Workshop held in Makeni that there are approximately 1.5 million mobile phone users in the country with average revenue per user of $7, a penetration rate of 40% and teledensity of about 28%.
The penetration rate of internet use in Sierra Leone stands at 0.29%.
