How to renew your Nigerian passport in Spain

11 Nov

This is the reality of getting your Nigerian passport renewed in Spain. The Nigerian embassy is in Madrid and it is the only point where your passport could be renewed even if you live in other parts of the country including Barcelona, Valencia, Bilbao and others. Irrespective of where you stay, you’ll have to book an appointment at the embassy a day before you go for the passport renewal submission. You can also go to the embassy for the same purpose without an appointment but those with a schedule will be honoured first.
The renewal costs 108USD (including 12USD service charge) which you’ll have to pay online using a system designed by Innovate One – I’m not sure if the company is owned by Indians but the customer care agent who treated my payment query sounds Indian. You must have a Spanish bank account or debit card to make the payment.
Before you submit your application, you’ll pay 60 euro administrative fee which is collected in cash.  After the interview and payment, you’ll be directed to the upper floor for the passport scanning process.
The embassy is in agreement with MRW courier with which you can arrange the return delivery of the new passport to your location. You can handle that on your own if you wish or seek the service of a Nigerian who is always in front of the embassy running the courier delivery errand for those willing to pay extra cash. I think he charges between six to ten euros.
During my visit on this month, a day after the send forth ceremony was held for former Nigerian ambassador, Ms Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, one of the questions posed to the immigration team is: Why can’t the Nigerian passport’s expiration period be extended to ten years instead of five? The team’s rep said he would pass the information to the Nigerian lawmakers.
Another is why do some Nigerians have to go through a third party to reach the embassy on phone to book the said appointment? The team’s rep said it shouldn’t be like that and that they are doing their best to rid the embassy of touts. He then suggested that applicants should consider another option to book the appointment at the embassy which is the internet-generated dates they get upon completion of their online application.
That’s the point I had to express my reservation. I warned everyone in the hall that the internet-generated appointment could be misleading sometimes. I used my experience to explain. I had traveled from Barcelona on a 14-hour coach return trip to honour an internet-generated appointment at the embassy in Madrid only to be informed that the immigration team doesn’t work on Fridays.
More than a day wasted: 11pm the previous night to 1am the next day. I missed the comfort of my bed and almost 100 euro.
The team’s rep was apologetic to my claim, calming it with a promise to ensure that everyone’s case get treated.
Do not go to the embassy thinking you’ll be done almost immediately. There might be days when lesser applicants turn up but I don’t want you to count on it. Many Nigerians in Spain seek to renew their Nigerian passports. Someone said he missed his return trip’s take-off to his city the last time he came to the embassy as he finished late.
I hope this 3-minute summary would make your trip less stressful especially if you are going for the passport renewal process for the first time and you have little or no information to lead you. It can save you a day of frustration. Good luck!
